Women's Soccer Drops 2011 Opener to No. 18 Franklin Pierce, 3-1
Box Score BOXSCORE - Mercy vs. Franklin Pierce
RINDGE, N.H. (Sept. 2, 2011) – On Friday afternoon, the Mercy College women's soccer team squared off against national powerhouse No. 18 Franklin Pierce University at Sodexo Field in Rindge, N.H. to open up the 2011 campaign. The Mavericks lost to the Ravens, 3-1, to drop to 0-1 overall. Franklin Pierce improved to 1-0 on the young season.
Mercy was down 3-0 with a little over three minutes remaining in the first half when sophomore back
Caitlin McKenna (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) recorded the first goal of the season for the Mavericks. She punched the ball into the left corner of the net off a free kick.
The three Ravens' goals were scored by senior Tori Gikas (Sydney, Australia) (5:13) and sophomore Talita Pereira (San Paulo, Brazil), who had a pair (12:32 and 31:12).
That was all the scoring the game would see as the second half produced two goose eggs. Both defenses stymied the offenses, especially the Mavericks' backfield which held the Ravens to seven shots, after they recorded 13 in the first stanza.
Between the pipes for Mercy, freshman netminder Krystal Guerrero (East Meadow, N.Y.) received the loss and stopped 11 shots in her collegiate debut. In goal for Franklin Pierce, senior goalkeeper Jocelyn Leon (Lenox, Mass.) earned the victory (one save).
The hosts held the advantage in corner kicks (6-1).
Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks play their second game of the Franklin Pierce Classic tomorrow against Southern Connecticut State. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m. Visit www.mercyathletics.com tomorrow for links to a live audio broadcast from Rindge, N.H.
