WATERBURY, CONN. (Sept. 22, 2011) – On Thursday night the Mercy College volleyball team took on Post University in Waterbury, Conn. looking to get back over .500 on the season.  After dropping the first set, the Mavericks prevailed in an epic 62-point second set before falling in four and dropping to 4-5, while Post improved to 2-11.

Mercy came close in the first set but came up two points short before taking the second by an incredible score of 32-30, but did not have quite enough left for the last two sets, falling 25-20 in both.

The Mavericks fell victim to the Eagles' astounding .344 hitting percentage, well over .100 better than any other match this season.  Sophomores outside hitter Emily Wilman (Perth Amboy, N.J.) and middle hitter Belinda Snider (Norwalk, Conn.) tied for the match lead with 18 kills each in leading the team to 56 kills with only 13 errors.  Wilman totaled the only double-double of the match with 11 digs as well.

Freshman outside hitter Brenna White (Gardnerville, Nev.) came into the match for Mercy ranked 12th in the nation in Division II with 4.31 kills per set and did what she could to move up the list, tying for the match lead with 18 kills and just missing another double-double with nine digs.

The Mavericks spread their offense out in terms of assists, with three players notching six or more but none more than eight.  Post's senior setter Taylor Doyle (Mystic, Conn.) assisted on 37 kills and senior libero Courtney Braun (Groton, Conn.) led the match with 18 digs.

Freshman defensive specialist Christina Bjerstedt (Lebanon, Ohio) led the Mavericks with four service aces as the team posted 10 total.  Freshman libero Ericka Kane (Glendale, Ariz.) and sophomore outside hitter Nicolette Gebhardt (Middletown, N.Y.) broke into double digits in digs with 11 and 10, respectively.

Head Coach Alan Clements and the Mavericks will look to rebound from the match Saturday in Nyack, N.Y. where they will face Nyack College at 3:00 p.m. and Holy Family University at 5:00 p.m. in a tri-match.
