Field Hockey Goes Down to Albright on Two Early Goals
Box Score READING, PA. (Sept. 24, 2011) – On Saturday afternoon the Mercy College field hockey team took on Albright College in Reading, Pa. still looking for the program's first win. Two quick Albright goals were enough for the Lions to claim the victory and improve to 1-7, but not without the Mavericks putting up a good fight in dropping to 0-8.
Junior midfielder Kaitlyn Pietrusewicz (Fleetwood, Pa.) scored both goals within the opening 10 minutes, getting the first on a penalty corner from senior forward Rose Casesi (Babylon, N.Y.) in the second minute and the other with a rocket of a shot from the top of the box in the ninth.
Mercy responded with a flurry of attacks, earning corner after corner and ripping three shots as the half wound down. The Mavericks turned the pressure up even more in the second half, outshooting the Lions 9-7 in the half and again topping them in corners (5-3 in the first, 6-5 in the second) and winning the shots on goal battle 4-3, as sophomore goalkeeper Marguerite DeLucas (West Reading, Pa.) made four saves to keep Mercy off the score sheet.
Freshman midfielder Kristine Carl (Kingston, N.Y.) led the attack for the Mavericks with four total shots, one of which was on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Kristen Znaniecki (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) made one save in the match on the Lions' only other shot on goal.
Head Coach Kayte Kinsley and the Mavericks will take on Limestone at Manhattanville College in Purchase, N.Y. tomorrow at 10:00 a.m.
