Field Hockey Battles Southern Connecticut State Strong; Falls, 4-2

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Sept. 29, 2011) – Looking to earn its first victory in program history, the Mercy College field hockey team nearly accomplished that, but were thwarted late by Southern Connecticut State University on Thursday evening in New Haven, Conn. The Owls fought back to find two equalizers as the Mavericks held two different leads. With the win, Southern Connecticut improved to 3-7 overall, while the Mavericks dropped to 0-10 on the year.
Mercy rookie forward Yolie Nyero (Carlisle, Pa.) got the scoring started when she fired the ball into the lower left corner of the goal to put the Mavericks ahead, 1-0, in the 20th minute. For the entire first half, the Mavericks' defense came up big and allowed no goals as the two squads went into halftime with Mercy leading, 1-0.
The Owls answered back when Randi Schock netted the equalizer four minutes into the second half on a penalty stroke. Ten minutes following that, Mercy found the back of the netting for the second time in the contest. This time it was freshman forward Marissa Kluber (Wading River, N.Y.) who scored. Nyero had the assist.
That 2-1 lead was short-lived for Mercy, however, as the Owls scored one minute later on a goal by Sarah Cebry. Southern Connecticut scored twice in the final 10 minutes for some further insurance and went on to secure the win.
Mercy continues its improvements this season and continues to post strong-defensive games. In addition, this game was the most solid offensive performance Head Coach Kayte Kinsley has seen out of her squad.
The Mavericks will look to lock down its first victory of the year at Elms College (Chicopee, Mass.) on Friday, October 7, when they play next. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
