Volleyball Battles ECC-Powerhouse Bridgeport Valiantly; Topped 3-1

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 29, 2011) – East Coast Conference-titan the University of Bridgeport entered Mercy Gymnasium harboring a 7-1 overall record and an unblemished league ledger of 2-0. The Mercy College volleyball team battled the Purple Knights strongly in all four sets, evening up the score after an epic second game. Mercy fell 3-1, with set scores of 21-25, 27-25, 23-25 and 14-25, but the Mavericks showed great character, determination and a gave off an aura that they will be in the ECC playoff hunt until the very end.

The first set was a back-and-forth affair, much like the second and third games. Mercy (5-8, 0-2 ECC) notched its highest hitting percentage of the match in the third set (66%), while Bridgeport's came in the fourth (71%).

Mercy freshman outside hitter Brenna White (Garderville, Nev.) paced the match with 19 kills, while also scooping up eight digs. Freshman libero Ericka Kane (Glendale, Ariz.) racked up a match-best 22 digs, while freshmen setters McKenna Ronan (Chandler, Ariz.) and Michala Askew (Ringgold, Ga.) posted 21 and 20 assists, respectively.

For the Purple Knights, senior setter Tamara Leite (Natal, Brazil) had a match-high 35 assists, while rookie outside hitter Biljana Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia) knocked down 15 kills.

Head Coach Alan Clements and the Mavericks return to action on Saturday when they travel to Easton, Mass. for a tri-match at Stonehill College. Mercy will square off against Franklin Pierce University at 1:30 p.m. and then Stonehill at 4:00 p.m.
