Men's Soccer Earns First Win of 2011 Season
Box Score BOXSCORE - Mercy vs. St. Rose
ALBANY, N.Y. (Sept. 3, 2011) – On Saturday afternoon, the Mercy College men's soccer team closed out its trip upstate for the Saint Rose Tournament with a 2-1 win over host Saint Rose (0-2). The victory is the Mavericks' first of the season after playing to a scoreless tie the night before.
Mercy started on the attack, registering three shots in the first 20 minutes before Saint Rose made an attempt, but the Golden Knights struck first. Junior midfielder Zak Duguay (Guilderland, N.Y.) slotted home a shot in the 22nd minute for the lead and the half ended with Saint Rose up by one.
It looked like things could get interesting quickly in the second half, but both goalkeepers made several saves to preserve the scoreline deep into the half, until junior forward Ernest Afful (Columbus, Ohio) connected on his game-high third shot on goal in the 79th minute for the equalizer.
With a new game on their hands, the Mavericks kept the pressure on the Golden Knights defense and finally broke through for what proved to be the game-winner, when senior back Collin Legge (Schodack, N.Y.) already having assisted on Afful's goal, received a ball from freshman midfielder Terrell Chapman (Baldwin, N.Y.) and blasted it in to take the lead in the 86th minute.
Mercy's defense locked down with just minutes to go and the team came away with a 1-0-1 record to start the season.
Junior goalkeeper Nick Papas (Castleton, N.Y.) made five saves in his first victory as a Maverick. Junior midfielder William Koki (Aurora, Colo.) was also credited for an assist on the Afful's goal. Mercy finished with a 14-8 shot advantage on Saint Rose.
Mercy will return to Dobbs Ferry for its home opener on Wednesday to take on Holy Family University, with kickoff slated for 4:00 p.m.
