Rindge, N.H. (Sept. 3, 2011) – On Saturday afternoon, the Mercy College women's soccer team closed out its appearance in the Franklin Pierce Classic at Sodexo Field in Rindge, N.H. against Southern Connecticut State. The Mavericks held their own for most of the first half, but ultimately succumbed to the Owls' relentless attack.
Mercy leaves the tournament with a 0-2 to start the season, while Southern Connecticut improves to 2-0.
The game started out fairly even, with Southern Connecticut State managing only two shots, which were both blocked by Mercy defenders. The half could easily have ended scoreless but for a penalty awarded to the Owls in the 35th minute, which sophomore forward Suzane Pires (Sao Paulo, Brazil) converted to give her team the 1-0 lead.
That was it for the action in the first half, but the second half kicked off quickly, with Southern Connecticut blasting two shots in the first three minutes and Mercy's freshman forward Chaz'ani Douglas (East Hartford, Conn.) heading a shot on goal, the Mavericks' only one of the match.
Mercy stayed firm on defense for the next 15 minutes but finally broke in the 65th and 68th minutes, giving Southern Connecticut the edge it needed to fall back and preserve the win.
Pires led the stat sheet with the opening penalty goal and an assist as the Owls outshot the Mavericks 12-2 (8-1 on goal). Freshman goalkeeper Krystal Guerrero (East Meadow, N.Y.) managed five saves among the barrage.
The Mavericks will be looking for their first win of the season next week in Florida, where they will face Saint Leo at 4:00 p.m.
