Field Hockey Suffers 4-1 Loss to Adelphi
Box Score BOXSCORE - Mercy vs. Adelphi
GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (Sept. 3, 2011) – On Saturday afternoon, the Mercy College field hockey team traveled out to Long Island to face Adelphi in the second match of the 2011 season. Both teams looked to even their records after having lost their season-openers but a strong second half gave Adelphi the win, improving their record to 1-1 while Mercy drops to 0-2.
Mercy fell behind almost instantly, as Adelphi's senior defender Crystal Gray (Smithtown, N.Y.) found the net barely two minutes into the match, and senior forward Jeanette Heimerle (Smithtown, N.Y.) followed up with another in the 11th minute to give the Panthers the 2-0 lead.
The Mavericks pulled one back in the 28th minute thanks to freshman midfielder Andrea Licostie (Lake Grove, N.Y.) on what would turn out to be their only shot of the game, and managed to head into the half down just one.
Adelphi came out firing in the second half, ultimately cracking 26 shots against sophomore goalkeeper Kristen Znaniecki (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) nine of which forced saves and two which found the back of the net. Senior forward Julianne Gerbino (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) and Heimerle led the charge for the Panthers, each with a goal on four and three shots on goal, respectively.
The Mavericks will continue their season-opening six-game road trip at Kutztown on Friday, Sept. 9, where they will take on Bellarmine at 1:00 p.m. and Kutztown at 5:00 p.m.
