BOXSCORE - Mercy vs. Bloomfield

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 7, 2011) – On Wednesday night, the Mercy College volleyball team played host to Bloomfield College in the Mercy Gymnasium.  Although the entire match was played incredibly close, key errors killed the Mavericks' hopes and they dropped the match in three sets, 28-26, 26-24 and 25-23.

Mercy's record is now 1-2, while the Lady Deacons start their season 1-0.

Each set was tightly contested, with neither team gaining much of an edge at any point and trading the lead several times late in each.  Mercy suffered the hard-luck loss in the first set, hitting .244 to Bloomfield's .125, but had trouble finishing plays in the final two as Bloomfield capitalized on its chances.

Once again Mercy funneled the majority of its attack through its outside hitters, freshman Brenna White (Gardnerville, Nev.) and sophomore Nicolette Gebhardt (Middetown, N.Y.). White led the match with a career-high 21 kills (her second 20-kill match this season) adding five digs and two service aces, while Gebhardt totaled 10 kills and seven digs.  Freshmen setters McKenna Ronan (Chandler, Ariz.) and Michala Askew (Ringgold, Ga.) combined for 32 assists.

Bloomfield spread its attack out, with five players taking 10 or more attacking chances, led by junior outside hitter Clodesh Marie Montano (Carolina, Puerto Rico) with 12 kills.  Junior setter Allison Hart (Pagosa Springs, Colo.) made 27 assists and junior defensive specialist Brandi Bodin contributed 11 digs as the libero.

Head Coach Alan Clements and the Mavericks will travel to Cheyney University in Cheyney, Pa. for their next two matches, on Saturday.  They will face Cheyney at 2:00 p.m. and Goldey-Beacom College at 4:00 p.m.
