Jasmine Williams Nets 23 in Fifth 20-Point Game of Season, Women's Basketball Scores Season-High 74 in ECC Loss to C.W. Post
DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Jan. 11, 2012) – Senior forward Jasmine Williams (Stratford, Conn.) poured in 23 points in her fifth 20-point performance of the year as the Mercy College women's basketball team netted a season-high 74 for the game, but visiting C.W. Post rode four double-digit scorers to an 86-74 East Coast Conference victory on Wednesday night.
The Pioneers improve to 11-5 overall with a 3-2 ECC record while Mercy drops to 0-12 (0-4).
C.W. Post took the early lead through the first 10 minutes but Mercy turned the tables with 11:34 to play on an 11-0 run behind a burst of energy and good chemistry. The Mavericks held about a five-point margin and looked to have their first halftime lead of the season until the final three minutes, when the Pioneers scored 12 unanswered points to take a three-point lead into the break.
The Mavericks bounced back quickly in the second half, rattling off a 14-2 run in less than four minutes and stretching the lead to as much as 10 before the Pioneers responded with 16 straight points to take a nine-point which lead they stretched into double-digits and held through the final whistle.
Jasmine Williams scored her 23 points on an impressive 11-17 from the field despite several missed layups early in the going as she and the Mavericks adjusted to the Pioneers' towering frontcourt that included four six-footers. Averaging 9.9 rebounds per game heading into the matchup, Jasmine Williams grabbed just one board tonight as senior forward Talia Beaulieu (Waldorf, Md.) shouldered the load with a team-high nine rebounds. Junior forward MarQuesha Moore (Bryans Road, Md.) added 12 points as the Mavericks' only other double-digit scorer in a rare start and senior forward Crasheena Ward (Danbury, Conn.) had one of Mercy's most impressive display, netting eight points in just 10 minutes of action after receiving just six minutes of playing time to date this season.
The Mavericks seemed to have no answer for senior guard Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.), who came into the game averaging 17.0 points per game and poured in 28 on 50 percent shooting to lead both teams. She added seven rebounds, three assists and three steals in a solid all-around performance as junior center Samantha Kopp (Franklinville, N.Y.), junior guard Ashley Caggiano (Holtsville, N.Y.) and graduate student forward Catherine Lutz (Easton, Pa.) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 18, 13 and 10 points, respectively. Junior forward Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the squad with 12 rebounds.
Head Coach Kelli Dunlay and the Mavericks will look to bounce back with their first ECC conference win of the year as they host Queens College (1-13, 0-4) in the first game of a doubleheader with the men's squad on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 1:00 p.m.
