Two Mavericks Post Double-Doubles as Women's Basketball Falls to UDC
Washington, D.C. (Jan. 17, 2012) – Senior forwards Jasmine Williams (Stratford, Conn.) and Talia Beaulieu (Waldorf, Md.) posted double-doubles but the Mercy College women's basketball team could not build on the momentum of its first East Coast Conference, falling 84-61 at the University of the District of Columbia on Wednesday night.
UDC improves to 13-3 overall and 4-2 in the ECC with the win, while Mercy drops to 1-14 (1-5).
Mercy hit the first basket of the night but UDC quickly took over as senior forward Dohnay Banice (Wilmington, Del.) scored seven straight points as part of a 12-2 run before the Mavericks scored nine unanswered points to tie things up at 19 with eight minutes left until halftime. Another big UDC run (16-2) gave the Firebirds a double-digit lead they stretched to 21 by the break.
The Mavericks quickly cut the deficit below 20 as the second half got under way, trimming it down to 17 on two occasions but the Firebirds put the game away, scoring 11 unanswered points over a four-minute stretch late in the half to extend the lead to 28. When the final whistle blew, UDC held a 23-point edge over Mercy, 84-61.
Williams, the ECC's leading scorer with 18.6 points per game, paced the Mavericks with 18 points and added 10 rebounds for the double-double while Beaulieu recorded 11 of each for her own double-double. Senior point guard Simone Williams (Waldorf, Md.) dished out 11 assists and just missed her fourth double-double of the year with nine points. Junior forward MarQuesha Moore (Bryans Road, Md.) also scored in double-digits, netting 10, and made a team-high five steals.
Senior forward Stacey Griffith (Fredericksburg, Va.) scored 12 points and pulled down 13 rebounds for the Firebirds' only double-double, while Banice ended the night with a game- and season-high 24 points and just missed another double-double in grabbing nine rebounds. Junior guard Janelle Junior (Riverside, Calif.) poured in 19 points, including five three-pointers, and made a game-high seven steals, and senior point guard Lauren Brittingham (Washington, D.C.) dished out eight assists.
Head Coach Kelli Dunlay and the Mavericks will look to bounce back at home on Saturday, Jan. 21 as they host St. Thomas Aquinas College (7-8, 2-3) in the first game of a doubleheader with the men's squad. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
