Women's Basketball Falls to No. 23 Dowling College
OAKDALE, N.Y. (Jan. 25, 2012) – The Mercy College women's basketball team fell to No. 23 Dowling College on Wednesday evening in Oakdale, N.Y. by a score of 70-24.
Dowling improves to 15-3 overall and 8-0 in the East Coast Conference with the win, while Mercy drops to 1-16 (1-7).
Mercy came out fired up enough to hit the first basket of the game and hold Dowling scoreless for the opening two and a half minutes, but the Golden Lions' quality showed soon after as they outscored the Mavericks 38-5 through the rest of the first half to take a 31-point lead into the break. The teams traded shots for a short while as the second half got underway but Dowling regained its 30-point margin at the 9:19 mark and shortly after scored the final 14 points of the game to win by 46.
Senior forward Jasmine Williams (Stratford, Conn.) led the Mavericks in points and rebounds with six each, while junior forward MarQuesha Moore (Bryans Road, Md.) added six points and five rebounds.
Freshman guard Christine Verrelle (Abington, Pa.) posted the game's only double-double for the Golden Lions, scoring 14 points and recording team highs in rebounds (11), assists (three) and steals (four). Senior wing Hannah Krueger (Mentone, Ind.) came off the bench to lead the game with 18 points in as many minutes, and junior guard Connie Simmons (Syosset, N.Y.) grabbed 10 boards while scoring seven points. Senior forward Sarah Schicher (Vienna, Austria) also enjoyed an impressive performance with eight points, eight rebounds and a team-high four blocks.
Head Coach Kelli Dunlay and the Mavericks will look to bounce back on Saturday, Jan. 28 as they host the University of Bridgeport (5-13, 3-5) at 1:00 p.m. in the first game of a doubleheader with the men's team.
