Jasmine and Simone Williams Record Double-Doubles, Lead Four Double-Digit Scorers in 83-69 ECC Loss at NYIT
OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Jan. 3, 2012) – Four Mavericks scored in double digits and two posted double-doubles but the Mercy College women's basketball team could not keep pace with NYIT, falling 83-69 in Old Westbury, N.Y. on Tuesday afternoon. Senior forward Jasmine Williams (Stratford, Conn.) paced the Mavericks with 16 points and added 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the year, while senior point guard Simone Williams (Waldorf, Md.) recorded another with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
NYIT improves to 8-4 overall and 2-0 in the East Coast Conference this season, while Mercy drops to 0-11 (0-3).
The game was tight early in the first half as the teams traded baskets, but shortly after Mercy led by one nearly five minutes in NYIT poured in 12 straight points to take a double-digit lead it would not relinquish, stretching it out to 22 before Mercy managed to cut the deficit to 17 at halftime.
The second half brought little change until Mercy rattled off 10 unanswered points in a two-minute stretch to cut the margin to 10, but the Bears extended it back out to 18 and although the Mavericks fought back to within 12 on several occasions, they could not get any closer and ultimately fell by 14.
Simone Williams stole a team-high four balls and fell four assists shy of a triple-double after fouling out with just over five minutes remaining in the game.
Senior forward Talia Beaulieu (Waldorf, Md.) nearly managed the team's third double-double of the game, scoring 11 points and grabbing nine rebounds, and junior forward MarQuesha Moore (Bryans Road, Md.) contributed an efficient 12 points off the bench despite carrying four fouls by the final whistle. Junior wing Jessica Biggs (Nanuet, N.Y.) added eight points and seven rebounds as well.
Five Bears reached double digits in scoring, with junior guard Rebecca Lynch (Hillsdale, N.J.) and senior wing Cierra Baker (Windsor, Conn.) leading the way with 16 points apiece. Baker added a team-high nine rebounds while senior point guard Nikki Jo Rotolo (Rome, N.Y.) dished out seven assists and junior guard Sabrinna Moore (Flushing, N.Y.) made eight steals in the victory.
