OAKDALE, N.Y. (Oct. 11, 2012) – Sophomore outside hitter Brenna White (Gardnerville, Nev.) inched closer to her 1,000th career kill as the Mercy College volleyball team squared off at East Coast Conference rival Dowling College on Thursday night.

Mercy drops to 3-15 overall and 0-7 in the ECC while Dowling improves to 14-6 (3-3).

The Golden Lions took an early lead in the first set on five straight points but Mercy recovered to tie things up at 14-14.  Dowling then took control, riding a 7-3 run to a 21-17 lead and closing the set out at 25-22 to take the 1-0 lead in the match.

Dowling rode its momentum into the second set, surging ahead to a 7-0 lead and never letting up.  After a 25-13 victory, the Golden Lions took control of the third set early once again and held on for the 25-20 win to take the match.

Sophomore outside hitter Cassy Kelly (Fraser, Mich.) led the Golden Lions with 17 kills on a whopping .727 hitting percentage, while freshman setter Kayla Dillman (Rochester, N.Y.) made 25 assists and freshman libero Kayla Morgan (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) recorded eight digs.

White and junior outside hitter Nicolette Gebhardt (Pine Bush, N.Y.) led the Mavericks with nine kills apiece, while sophomore setter McKenna Ronan (Chandler, Ariz.) led the match with 28 assists and served up two aces.  White added two block assists and junior libero Mallorie Hopkins (Commerce, Calif.) led the team with eight digs.

White is now 58 kills away from notching the 1,000th of her career.  Ronan just made her 1,000th assist last week and Gebhardt smacked her 800th kill on Tuesday.  Senior middle blocker Kassy Phillips (Marcellus, N.Y.) also appeared in her 98th career match and is set to reach 100 on Thursday, Oct. 18 in Mercy Gymnasium.

Head Coach Taneisha Cantave and the Mavericks will finally close out their five-match conference road trip at the University of the District of Columbia (7-10, 2-5) on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 7:00 p.m.  The Mavericks recorded a 3-1 victory over the Firebirds in their final matchup last year, in which White smashed 27 kills on a then-career-high .413 hitting percentage and made 14 digs.
