DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 13, 2012) – Junior forward Ransmond Aboagye (Bronx, N.Y.) netted a brace to lead the Mercy College men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over East Coast Conference foe the University of the District of Columbia on Saturday afternoon.

Mercy record now stands at 9-3-2 overall and 4-3 in the ECC, giving the Mavericks sole possession of third place in the conference with just two games remaining before the Championship.  UDC falls to 4-6-2 (1-4-1) with the loss.

UDC held the edge early on, forcing two saves of junior goalkeeper Nick Papas (Castleton, N.Y.) in the opening four minutes, but Mercy fired up its attack shortly after with senior forwards Ernest Afful (Columbus, Ohio) and William Koki (Aurora, Colo.) putting a trio of shots on goal in the next two minutes.

The Mavericks kept up the pressure and Aboagye notched his first goal in the 13th minute, taking a pass from freshman back Luigi Puello (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) dribbling around a defender and firing the ball home for the 1-0 lead.

Mercy never let up, ripping 13 shots in the first half alone, which led to Aboagye capping off his brace in the 41st minute, beating three defenders after receiving the ball from Afful and giving Mercy the 2-0 lead.

The Mavericks settled back to preserve the shutout through the second half and did just that, with Papas ending the day with seven saves in his fourth shutout of the season.  Aboagye recorded his fourth goal of the year and second game-winner.

Head Coach Chris Smith and the Mavericks will host Felician College (4-6-2) in their final non-conference bout of the year on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 3:00 p.m.  The team will also be celebrating Senior Day, when Eric Guede, Alex Redmond, Manuel Paulino, Afful, Moustapha Dioum and Koki will be honored for their contributions to the team.
