Women's Soccer Tops ECC-Foe No. 25 Dowling, 3-1
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 17, 2012) - On Wednesday afternoon, the Mercy College women's soccer team downed East Coast Conference-opponent No. 25 Dowling College, 3-1 at Mavericks Field. Freshman Dawn Hickey (Bohemia, N.Y.) scored two of Mercy's three goals. With the win, the Mavericks improved to 4-11 overall and 1-5 in the league. Following the defeat, the Golden Lions slipped to 9-3-1 on the year and 2-2-1 in the ECC.
Mercy drew first blood in the 36th minute when junior Crystal Mena (Newport Beach, Calif.) punched the ball 35 yards out on the right side off a free kick towards the front of the goal. Fellow junior Jennifer Vega (Norwalk, Calif.) headed the ball in off Mena's free kick to score Mercy's first goal of the game.
The game went to halftime in favor of the Mavericks, 1-0. Following the break, Hickey chipped the ball over the goalkeeper's head in the 47th minute for a quick 2-0 lead. Junior Stephanie Manta (Valley Stream, N.Y.) had the assist.
Hickey recorded her second marker of the contest in the 78th minute. Junior Carla Hager (Palmdale, Calif.) headed the ball past a defender and then passed it to Hickey who fired it past the goalkeeper.
Less than a minute later, Dowling scored its first goal of the day, but it wasn't enough as Mercy secured the 3-1 victory.
In net, senior Stephanie DiLegge (Bay Shore, N.Y.) had three saves for the Mavericks.
Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and his squad return to action on Saturday when the Mavericks play at the University of Bridgeport for ECC action. Game time is slated for 3:00 p.m.
