White and Zubiate Lead Volleyball in ECC Matchup With Queens

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 18, 2012) – Sophomore outside hitter Brenna White (Gardnerville, Nev.) smacked 15 kills and junior libero Kirstie Zubiate (Salinas, Calif.) recorded a career-high 16 digs as the Mercy College volleyball team hosted East Coast Conference rival Queens College on Thursday night.

The Knights jumped ahead in the first set and slowly extended it to a 25-17 victory to take the 1-0 match lead, then rode their momentum into the second set for a 25-15 win.  Mercy contested the third set more tightly, leading at 7-5 and pulling back within one at 15-14 before Queens rode a 5-1 run out to a 21-16 lead and ended the night with a 25-21 win to take the match.

Mercy drops to 3-17 overall and 0-9 in ECC play, while Queens improves to 3-17 (3-6).

White's 15 kills and .290 hitting percentage led the Mavericks, while sophomore setter McKenna Ronan (Chandler, Ariz.) made 24 assists and freshman middle blocker Hana Brucaj (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) recorded 1.5 total blocks.  White is now just 36 kills shy of recording the 1,000th of her career and has topped 300 for the season, leading the ECC and ranking seventh in all of Division II in kills-per-set with a 4.39 average.

Freshman outside hitter Else Buchmiller (Sacramento, Calif.) led the Knights with 12 kills on a .435 hitting percentage, while junior setter Ceren Kilic (Istanbul, Turkey) made 29 assists and freshman libero Xhesi Domi (Selden, N.Y.) recorded 16 digs.  Senior outside hitter Suzanne Byrne (Richmond, B.C.) just missed a double-double with nine kills and 10 digs, while freshman setter Kayla Mergl (Sayville, N.Y.) served up four aces.

Head Coach Taneisha Cantave and the Mavericks will host NYIT (14-5, 6-2) tomorrow, Friday, Oct. 19 at 7:00 p.m.
