BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Oct. 2, 2012) – Sophomore outside hitter Brenna White (Gardnerville, Nev.) posted her fifth 20-kill match and double-double of the season at the University of Bridgeport in an East Coast Conference matchup tonight.

The Mavericks dropped the first two sets by scores of 25-17 and 25-20 before dominating the third, 25-15, but lost the fourth 25-19 and the match, 3-1.  Mercy's record drops to 2-13 overall and 0-5 in the ECC with the defeat while Bridgeport improves to 11-2 (4-0).

The Mavericks fell behind early in the first set and could not recover but were level in the second as late as 16-16, but the Purple Knights pulled away late on a 8-2 run to go up 2-0 in the match.  The Mavericks took control in the third set, winning the first three points and using a 6-1 run midway through to extend the lead to 19-11 before closing it out with the final four points.  Unfortunately, the Mavericks did not have enough left to contest a fourth set and the Purple Knights quickly doubled up on Mercy, 10-5 and 16-8, and cruised to victory, although the Mavericks staged a late rally to cut the deficit as close as 19-17 before succumbing.

White led the match with 21 kills and added 12 digs for the double-double, while junior outside hitter Nicolette Gebhardt (Pine Bush, N.Y.) smacked 12 kills on an impressive .391 hitting percentage and  sophomore setter McKenna Ronan (Chandler, Ariz.) made 41 assists.  Junior libero Mallorie Hopkins (Commerce, Calif.) led the Mavericks with 13 digs and freshman outside hitter Abi Foti (Bedford, N.H.) set a career high with 11 digs.

Sophomore outside hitter Ying Shen (Nanjing, China) led Bridgeport with an incredible .560 hitting percentage thanks to just one error and added 12 digs to record the double-double.   Sophomore outside hitter Biljana Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia) added 13 kills and sophomore setter Fernanda Silva (Brasilia, Brazil) made 32 assists.

Head Coach Taneisha Cantave and the Mavericks will travel to new ECC foe Roberts Wesleyan College (6-8, 2-2) on Friday, Oct. 5 for a 7:00 p.m. opening serve.
