Women's Soccer Notches Exhilarating Double-Overtime Win Against Philadelphia, 2-1
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 24, 2012) - On Wednesday afternoon, after the Mercy College women's soccer team honored its two graduating seniors, the Mavericks defeated the Rams of Philadelphia University in a thrilling, double-overtime contest, 2-1. Junior Lisa Shaw (South Pasadena, Calif.) had the game-winner in the 103rd minute of the game to send the Mavericks' fans home happy.
With the win, Mercy improved to 5-12 overall. Following the defeat, the Rams fell to 11-6 on the season.
The Rams notched the game's first goal of the contest in the 12th minute when Melissa Copeland fired one in off a quick rebound of her previous shot, seconds earlier.
Mercy was able to find the equalizer much later, as the defenses did a stellar job holding the offenses' down. In the 77th minute, junior Crystal Mena (Newport Beach, Calif.) one-touched the ball in off a pass from fellow junior Jennifer Vega (Norwalk, Calif.) to knot the score at 1-all.
The game continued this way until in the second overtime period when Shaw recorded the game-winner off a touch from Vega.
For the Mavericks, senior Stephanie DiLegge (Bay Shore, N.Y.) finished with five saves.
Mercy held the advantage in both corner kicks (8-0) and shots (18-10).
Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks close out the 2012 campaign when they travel to Sparkill, N.Y. for an East Coast Conference battle with St. Thomas Aquinas College. Game time is slated for 12:00 p.m.
