Women's Soccer Battles No. 11 LIU Post Down to the Wire
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 3, 2012) - On Wednesday afternoon, the Mercy College women's soccer team geared up to play the No. 11 ranked team in the country - LIU Post. The Pioneers eeked out a 1-0 win with six minutes remaining in the second overtime period at Mavericks Field. With the win, the Pioneers improved to 9-1-1 overall and 4-0 in the East Coast Conference. Following the loss, the Mavericks slipped to 3-9 on the year and 0-5 in the league.
Although there was a total of 27 shots between the two clubs kicked in the first 90 minutes of the game, none found its way past either goalkeeper. The first overtime didn't see any goals as well.
With six minutes to go until a tantalizing 0-0 tie against a highly-ranked team, the Pioneers' Hanna Westerling was able to score on Mercy senior goalkeeper Stephanie DiLegge (Bay Shore, N.Y.). Off a feed from Alexa Niciforo, Westerling chipped the ball in over the keeper's head from a few yards out.
Mercy was able to get four shots on goal against LIU Post goalkeeper Nicole Fierro. In net, DiLegge made seven saves for the hosts.
Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks return to action on Monday, Oct. 8 when they venture to Albany, N.Y. to square off against the College of Saint Rose. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
