DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 9, 2012) – Sophomore outside hitter Brenna White (Gardnerville, Nev.) recorded her sixth 20-kill match of the season on a career-high .731 hitting percentage to lead the Mercy College volleyball team to a dominant 3-0 sweep of winless Cheyney University on Tuesday night.

Mercy improves to 3-14 on the season with the victory while Cheyney, which has not won a single set this year, falls to 0-17.

The Mavericks took some time to get going, even falling behind 8-7 in the first set, but quickly regained their composure and stormed back to a 17-9 lead on a 10-1 run before finishing the first set off, 25-13.  Mercy jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second set thanks to a trio of kills from White and slowly built up to a 13-8 lead before rattling off nine straight points and closing it out at 25-11.  In the third set, sophomore setter McKenna Ronan (Chandler, Ariz.) served up three straight aces to the same spot on the floor to put the Mavericks up 7-2, then five unanswered points made it 13-3 and Mercy cruised from there, ultimately finishing things off with a 25-14 victory and the sweep.

White finished with an impressive 22 kills over the three-set match, including the opening point of each set, and just missed her seventh double-double of the year with nine digs.  Her .731 hitting percentage also led the team, with junior middle blocker Nicole Pepe (East Meadow, N.Y.) just behind at .727 on nine kills.  Ronan made an incredible 40 assists for her fourth 40-assist match of the season and added four of the team's 12 service aces, while junior libero Mallorie Hopkins (Commerce, Calif.) recorded a match-high 11 digs for her fifth consecutive double-digit dig game.

Junior middle hitter Lindsay Ashby (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and freshman outside hitter Kennetha Wallace (Nashville, Tenn.) led the Wolves with four kills each, with Wallace adding a team-high five assists and Ashby making 1.5 total blocks (along with six blocking errors).  Freshman outside hitter Virshae Campbell (Long Beach, Calif.) recorded seven digs and a pair of service aces to lead the squad.

Head Coach Taneisha Cantave and the Mavericks (3-14, 0-6) will pick conference play back up as they head to Dowling College (13-6, 2-3) on Thursday, Oct. 11 for a 7:00 p.m. opening serve.
