Lewis Leads Women's Basketball Trio of Double Digit Scorers in Season Opener Versus UMass-Lowell

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Nov. 10, 2012) – Sophomore forward Shaniqua Lewis (Staten Island, N.Y.) had a career game in leading the women's basketball team with 16 points and eight rebounds as the Mavericks hosted UMass-Lowell on Saturday afternoon in their season opener.

The Mercy College department of athletics and recreation waived admission for the game, instead collecting donations for the Red Cross.

Mercy starts the season 0-1 while the UMass-Lowell is now 1-0.

The River Hawks shot a ridiculous 60 percent from the field overall, including 42 percent on three-pointers, and outrebounded the Mavericks by 22.  Mercy struggled with turnovers, committing 26 while UMass-Lowell posted a nearly 2:1 assist-to-turnover ratio.

Lewis set four career highs and tied two others in her impressive performance.  Senior guard Aysha Williams (New Rochelle, N.Y.) netted 15 points and junior guard Maria Nardulli (Staten Island, N.Y.) rounded out the Mavericks' double-digit scorers with 11, also setting a career high with five made field goals.  Williams also recorded seven rebounds and team-highs with five assists, two steals and two blocks while freshman guard Danielle Losee (Merrick, N.Y.) hit a team-high three three-pointers on four attempts.

Freshman guard Jennifer Gonsalves (Harwich, Mass.) led the game with 25 points, tying for the team lead with four made three-pointers, while freshman guard Amra Elezovic (Manchester, N.H.) led the squad with nine rebounds and six steals.  Senior guard Brianna Calver (Shelby, Ohio) topped the team with nine assists.

Head Coach Rashidi Aikens and the Mavericks will head to West Chester, Pa. to take on Philadelphia University (1-0) on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 1:00 p.m.
