Williams Leads Women's Basketball in ECC Opener at Queens
Box Score FLUSHING, N.Y. (Dec. 1, 2012) – Senior guard Aysha Williams (New Rochelle, N.Y.) scored in double digits for the fourth time in as many games this season as the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped its East Coast Conference opener at Queens College on Saturday afternoon. The game was changed from a home date in Dobbs Ferry just two days prior; Mercy will now host Queens in a men's and women's doubleheader on January 26, 2013.
Mercy fell to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in ECC play while Queens improved to 3-2 (1-0).
The Mavericks struggled to control the ball, committing 20 turnovers while failing to register a single assist. Still, their pressure defense did its job in forcing the Knights to commit 22 turnovers.
The Knights scored the first six points of the game and once the Mavericks got on the board quickly rode a 12-2 run to a 20-6 lead. Queens extended its margin to 17 by halftime and went up by more than 20 early in the second half. Mercy cut the deficit back to 16 before Queens took another big run, 15-3, and closed things out at 82-43 in the end.
Williams led the Mavericks with 11 points while senior forward MarQuesha Moore (Bryans Road, Md.) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and junior guard Maria Nardulli (Staten Island, N.Y.) made three steals.
Four Knights scored in double digits, led by freshman center MacKenzie Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y.) who had 19 while shooting a perfect 9-9 from the field. Rowland also led Queens with 14 rebounds to post the double-double, while redshirt senior guard Bria Jackson (Rochester, N.Y.) and sophomore guard Marie Byrnes (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each posted double-doubles as well.
Head Coach Rashidi Aikens and the Mavericks will continue conference play as they travel to Roberts Wesleyan College (4-2,0-0) on Saturday, Dec. 8 for a 2:00 p.m. tipoff
