Trio of Mavericks Crash Boards for Double-Digit Rebounds as Women's Basketball Squares Off with Roberts Wesleyan
Box Score ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Dec. 8, 2012) – A trio of Mavericks broke the double-digit rebound barrier for the first time each this season as the Mercy College women's basketball team took on new East Coast Conference foe Roberts Wesleyan College early Saturday afternoon.
Mercy fell to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the ECC while Roberts Wesleyan improved to 6-2 (1-0).
Roberts Wesleyan hit the first bucket of the game but Mercy took the lead on back-to-back baskets and again following a Redhawks jump shot. Roberts Wesleyan scored six straight points to go up 10-6 before Mercy cut the margin down to one and stuck close until about nine minutes remained in the first half, when Roberts Wesleyan rattled off a 15-5 run to close out the half and lead 33-19 at the break. The Redhawks extended their lead throughout the second half, eventually winning by 30, 73-43.
Senior guard Aysha Williams (New Rochelle, N.Y.) led the Mavericks with nine points and three assists, just missing her second career double-double with 10 rebounds. Senior forward MarQuesha Moore (Bryans Road, Md.) and freshman guard Amber Harrison (Baldwin, N.Y.) each scored eight and made three steals, with Moore grabbing 10 rebounds, while sophomore forward Shaniqua Lewis (Staten Island, N.Y.) netted seven while pulling down a game- and career-high 12 rebounds, including a whopping 11 on the offensive glass.
Sophomore forward Marissa Sell (Brockport, N.Y.) came off the bench to lead the game with 18 points, while sophomore guard Ashley Cianfriglia (Syracuse, N.Y.) and freshman center Samantha Courtney (Marathon, N.Y.) scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, with Courtney just missing a double-double with nine rebounds and making a game-high four blocks. Senior guard Marissa Bunce (Phelps, N.Y.) also came close to a double-double with nine points and 10 assists while adding nine steals.
Head Coach Rashidi Aikens and the Mavericks will start a four-game break from conference play as they host Southern New Hampshire University (3-4) on Monday, Dec. 10 at 5:00 p.m. As always, the game will be broadcast live online via this link.
