ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Dec. 8, 2012) - On Saturday evening, the Mercy College men's basketball squad ventured up to Rochester, N.Y. to battle East Coast Conference-opponent Roberts Wesleyan College. The Redhawks narrowly-edged out the Mavericks in overtime, 84-79 at the Voller Athletic Center. With the win, the Redhawks improved to 4-4 overall and 1-0 in the league. Following the loss, the Mavericks slipped to 0-7 on the year and 0-2 in the ECC.

The first half proved to be a back-and-forth affair as the score alternated from a Roberts Wesleyan slim lead to a tie. The Mavericks trailed at halftime, 39-34.

Mercy came out of the intermission and ripped off an 8-2 run, thanks in part to a pair of three-pointers from junior forward Remi Mignott (Brooklyn, N.Y.). With 17:42 left in the second stanza, the Mavericks led, 42-40.

The score remained within seven points of a tie until the final stretch. With 14 seconds remaining in regulation, Mercy graduate student Khiry Gordon (Philadelphia, Pa.) drove in a lay-up to knot the score at 71-71 to send the contest into overtime.

A bunch of free throws caused the scoring changes early on in the extra period. With 1:04 left and the score tied at 75-all, William Bromirski nailed a three-pointer to put the Redhawks in the lead. Roberts Wesleyan converted on all six free throws within the final 34 seconds to secure the 84-79 victory.

For the Mavericks, senior forward Joseph Pope (Akron, Ohio) and Mignott combined for 43 points, with Pope scoring 22 and Mignott dropping in 21. Junior Kirk Bailey (Freeport, N.Y.) put together another solid game with nine points and 12 rebounds, five of which were on the offensive boards.

For the Redhawks, Mike Stone netted a game-high 25 points off the bench, while Patrick Downer and Bromirski had 19 and 16, respectively. Devin Grimes posted 16 rebounds.

Head Coach Adam Parmenter and the Mavericks return to action on Wednesday night when they host non-league opponent Pace University. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. The contest between the Mavericks and the Setters (5-3 overall, 3-3 NE-10) will be live streamed at this link.
