DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 22, 2012) – Senior forward Jasmine Williams (Stratford, Conn.) poured in a game-high 23 points on the night she was honored for becoming the 18th Maverick to score 1,000 points in her career last week, but a big second-half Dowling College run was too much for the Mercy College women's basketball team as it fell, 66-47, to its East Coast Conference foe on Wednesday night.

Dowling improves to  19-6 overall and an ECC lead-tying 12-3 in conference play, while Mercy drops to 3-22 (3-12).

Dowling jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead in the opening three minutes, but Mercy responded quickly to cut the lead to three at 10-7.  Dowling built its lead back up to double digits and led by as many as 12 before Mercy once again began chipping away.  The Mavericks managed to hold the Golden Lions scoreless over the final 2:37 and scored six straight points to end the half down just four.

The Golden Lions came back out with another quick start, putting up the first five points of the second half to go up by nine, which Mercy once again trimmed to just three with 16:39 to play.  That's when Dowling really came alive, however, to put up 20 unanswered points over a six-minute stretch and take a dominant 23-point lead.  Mercy tried to fight back but as Dowling later upped the margin to 24, but could only manage to cut it down to 19 by the final whistle.

Junior forward Talia Beaulieu (Waldorf, Md.) led the team in pulling down nine rebounds for the 12th time this season and third consecutive, while senior point guard Simone Williams (Waldorf, Md.) dished out four assists.

Senior forward Sarah Schicher (Vienna, Austria) and sophomore forward Julia Koppl (Innsbrook, Austria) posted the first double-doubles Mercy has allowed in two weeks, with Schicher netting a team-high 16 points and grabbing 13 rebounds and Koppl scoring 15 while also pulling down 13 boards.  Freshman guard and ECC Rookie of the Year favorite Christine Verrelle (Abington, Pa.) also broke double digits in scoring with 11 points.

Head Coach Kelli Dunlay and the Mavericks will end their season this Saturday, Feb. 25 with a 1:00 p.m. tipoff against St. Thomas Aquinas College (15-10, 10-5).
