Men's Basketball Falls in Final Home Game of Season to Dowling, 68-53

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 22, 2012) – On Wednesday, the Mercy College men's basketball team slipped up against East Coast Conference-opponent Dowling College on Senior Day, 68-53, at Mercy Gymnasium in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. With the win, the Golden Lions improved to 11-14 overall and 7-8 in the league. Following the defeat, the Mavericks dropped to 4-21 on the year and 3-12 in conference action.

Down eight points a few minutes into the first half, the Mavericks put together a strong streak to grab a brief 15-13 lead over the Golden Lions. However, they weren't able to sustain it as Dowling reeled off a 15-0 run over the next five and a half minutes. Dowling went into halftime with a 36-19 advantage.

The second half got underway in favor of the Golden Lions, but the Mavericks cut their deficit to 52-40 with 7:58 remaining in regulation. Dowling knocked out six more points to get the advantage back up to an 18-point lead. The guests eventually sealed up the 68-53 victory.

For the Mavericks, junior guard Colin Senior (Hackensack, N.J.) scored a team-high 16 points, while junior forward LeBrandon Smith (Jamaica, N.Y.) added 10. In addition, Senior brought down seven rebounds.

For the Golden Lions, senior guard John Merchant III (Monticello, N.Y.) netted a game-high 18 points, while sophomore forward Justin Alexander (Staten Island, N.Y.) had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the double-double.

Head Coach Adam Parmenter and the Mavericks close out their 2011-12 campaign when they venture to Sparkill, N.Y. on Saturday afternoon to battle St. Thomas Aquinas College in ECC action. Game time is slated for 3:00 p.m.
