Talia Beaulieu Continues Incredible Week as Women's Basketball Falls to Dominican (N.Y.)
DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 6, 2012) – Senior forward Talia Beaulieu (Waldorf, Md.) continued the best week of her career, leading the Mavericks with 17 points and eight rebounds, but the Mercy College women's basketball team could not keep up with Dominican (N.Y.) College, falling 75-55 on Monday night.
Dominican gets back to .500 at 10-10 on the season with the win, while Mercy drops to 2-19.
Mercy fell out of contention early on as the team hit only 17 percent of their shots in the first half and ended the night at 23 percent from the field despite committing a season-low 10 turnoversand forcing 24 of the Chargers.
The Mavericks fell behind 6-0 to start, scoring first on a Beaulieu layup to spark a 7-3 run but went nearly 10 minutes until their next basket, at which point Dominican led by 10 in the middle of a 14-2 run. The Chargers continued to extend their lead, heading into the break up by 17.
The second half was more of the same as the Chargers stretched out their lead to as much as 29 before the Mavericks managed to cut the deficit to 20 by the final whistle.
Beaulieu, who was just named to the ECC Honor Roll for Week 12, also added a team- and career-high five steals, while senior forward Jasmine Williams (Stratford, Conn.) dropped in 11 points as the Mavericks' only other double-digit scorer. Williams also blocked a shot to tie for 10th place all-time at Mercy and is just 17 points shy of her 1,000th career point.
Junior guard Lindsey Lopez led the game with 18 points, which included four three-pointers in 12 attempts, and paced the squad with five assists. Three other Chargers – sophomore forward KC Jentzen (Pearl River, N.J.), junior center Bianca Harris (Teaneck, N.J.) and senior forward Marley Klunk (York, Pa.) – posted double-doubles in the victory, with Harris leading the way with 12 points and 13 rebounds and the others each recording 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Head Coach Kelli Dunlay and the Mavericks (2-19 overall, 2-9 in the ECC) will return to conference play on Wednesday, Feb. 8 as they travel to C.W. Post (16-7, 7-4) on Long Island for a 5:00 p.m. tipoff.
