Women's Lacrosse Falls at No. 9 New Haven
Box Score WEST HAVEN, Conn. (Mar. 10, 2012) – The Mercy College women's lacrosse team struck first but could not keep up with No. 9 New Haven on Saturday afternoon, falling 19-4.
New Haven improves to 2-0 while Mercy falls to 0-2.
Mercy struck immediately as freshman midfielder Alyssa Handel (Medford, N.Y.) buried a shot just 13 seconds in for the game's first goal, but New Haven picked up its game quickly and scored three goals within two minutes to go up 3-1. Seconds after the Chargers' third strike, freshman midfielder Michelle Tiernan (Farmingdale, N.Y.) took a pass from junior midfielder Julie Darnulc (Baldwin, N.Y.) and put it away to cut the lead to one. Mercy held strong for four more minutes before things began to unravel, as New Haven found the net seven more times in the half to take a 10-2 lead into the break.
The Chargers managed two more quick scores in the second half before Handel put away her second of the game, again unassisted. Darnulc later found sophomore attacker Kelsey Bub (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) for the Mavericks' fourth goal, but New Haven was well clear at that point and held on for the 19-4 win.
Tiernan impressed again on draw clears, pulling down 11, and freshman midfielder Kelsey Healy (Bay Shore, N.Y.) picked up a team-high four ground balls. Handel led the squad with two goals and three caused turnovers.
Senior attacker Sarah Magnone (Yardley, Pa.) led the Chargers with four goals, while senior midfielder Ashley Ferrandiz (West Sayville, N.Y.) and senior attacker Alexis Gabbe (Malverne, N.Y.) tied for the team lead with three assists apiece. Ferrandiz was a perfect 2-2 on free position attempts and also notched three draw clears. Freshman midfielder Kathryn Campbell (Mansfield, Mass.) put up an impressive all-around line with two goals, two assists, four ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Freshman goalkeeper Mia Wagner (Hamburg, N.Y.) played between the posts again and made eight stops while senior goalkeeper Maureen Spellman (Trumbull, Conn.) weathered the Mavericks' attack with eight saves as well.
Head Coach Francesca DeLorenzo and the Mavericks will look to bounce back on Saturday, March 17 as they travel to Millersville, Pa. to take on Millersville University (0-1) at 1:00 p.m.
