FT. PIERCE, Fla. (Mar. 15, 2012) – The Mercy College baseball team enjoyed two brilliant pitching performances against No. 27 Southern Connecticut State University on Thursday afternoon but came up one run short in each game of a doubleheader in Ft. Pierce, Fla.

Southern Connecticut State improves to 10-3 with the wins, while Mercy falls to 0-10.

Junior Tom Cummings (Coatesville, Pa.) went eight innings in the first game, giving up just one earned run on three hits while striking out six, and sophomore third baseman Ken Post (Closter, N.J.) recorded an RBI single but the Owls came through in extra innings to take the opening game, 2-1.

In the second game, sophomore Joseph O'Neill (Long Beach, N.Y.) hurled a seven-inning complete game, limiting the Owls to just one earned run in the third inning on six hits, but the Mavericks offense could not muster any run support for him and Mercy fell again, 1-0.

Head Coach Bob Greiner and the Mavericks will next take on Merrimack College (6-6) on Friday, March 15 in another doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
