Julie Darnulc Impresses Again in Women's Lacrosse Loss to Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. (Mar. 17, 2012) – Junior midfielder Julie Darnulc (Baldwin, N.Y.) continued an impressive start to the season with another four goals and two assists against Millersville University on Saturday afternoon, but the Mavericks struggled to keep pace with the Marauders, falling 17-10.

Millersville improves to 3-2 with the win, while Mercy drops to 0-3.

Mercy gave up a quick goal to go down 1-0 but Darnulc answered minutes later to tie it up and freshman midfielder Michelle Tiernan (Farmingdale, N.Y.) scored the go-ahead man-up goal a minute after, but the Marauders rattled off seven straight to take an 8-2 lead with eight minutes left in the half.  Darnulc struck for back-to-back scores to cut the deficit to four, but that was as close as the Mavericks would get.

Millersville added a few more goals to take a commanding 15-4 lead midway through the second half, but Mercy turned it up a level to score six goals in the final 15 minutes, including the last four of the contest.

Darnulc's four goals and two assists led the team in both categories, while freshman midfielder Alyssa Handel (Medford, N.Y.) contributed an assists and a team-high five ground balls.  The pair combined for a perfect 10 shots on goal in 10 attempts.  Mercy struggled in most offensive categories but did well in possession, committing only 15 turnovers to Millersville's 17. 

Junior goalkeeper Stephanie DiLegge (Bay Shore, N.Y.) returned in net after missing the first two games of the season due to injury, making five saves in 17 chances.  She was replaced at halftime by freshman Mia Wagner (Hamburg, N.Y.), who made two saves in the second half.

Junior midfielder Ashley Henderson (Folsom, Pa.) led the Marauders with four goals and tallied an assist, while junior goalkeeper Lauren Mateja (King of Prussia, Pa.) made nine saves in net over 51 minutes, allowing six goals.

Head Coach Francesca DeLorenzo and the Mavericks will look to pick u their first win of the season on Tuesday, March 20 when they face off with Florida Southern University in Orlando, Fla. over Spring Break.  Game time is set for 5:00 p.m.
