Baseball Sweeps No. 20 Franklin Pierce in Florida FInale

FT. PIERCE, Fla. (Mar. 18, 2012) – The Mercy College baseball team picked up its first two wins of the season in the final doubleheader of its Florida trip against No. 20 Franklin Pierce University on Sunday afternoon, taking the first game 5-3 and the second 9-4.

Mercy improves to 2-12 on the season while Franklin Pierce drops to 10-6.

Freshman Bryan Greig (New City, N.Y.) picked up his first collegiate win in the opener, giving up just two earned runs on six hits over seven innings, striking out three.  Junior right fielder Andrew Bock (Malverne, N.Y.) knocked two key runs in on a single and Mercy scored another three unearned runs off the Ravens pitching staff.  Senior Walter Kowalczyk (Walhalla, N.Y.) allowed one run over two innings to pick up the save.

The Mavericks offense exploded for nine runs in the second inning of the last Florida game, with freshman catcher Sal Palumbo (Medford, N.Y.) and sophomore shortstop Jeremy Lovera (Carmel, N.Y.) each batting two runs in on singles.  Senior Tyler Savin )Wantagh, N.Y.) pitched five innings in the start, giving up four earned runs on four hits, and senior Chuck DeHart (Staten Island, N.Y.) picked up the save with four perfect innings to close the game and trip.

Head Coach Bob Greiner and the Mavericks will host East Coast Conference opponent Dowling College (8-7) on Wednesday, March 21 at 3:00 p.m. in their home opener.
