WATERBURY, Conn. (Mar. 21, 2012) – On Wednesday afternoon, the Mercy College softball team swept a doubleheader with Post University in Waterbury, Conn. by scores of 7-2 and 4-3. Sophomore Alexandra Puglisi (Shelton, Conn.) earned the win in both games. With the victories, the Mavericks improved to 10-7 overall. Following the losses, the Eagles dropped to 5-13 on the season.

Game One: Mercy 7, Post 2

To open up the game, senior shortstop Jenna Ausiello (Petaluma, Calif.) got the action started when she singled home freshman second baseman Shannon Forbes (Nesconset, N.Y.). One inning later, Forbes reached on an error, which allowed junior rightfielder Ashley Johnstone (Bellmore, N.Y.) to touch home plate.

Mercy took a 3-0 lead in the third when Johnstone notched an RBI single, plating Ausiello, who opened the frame with a double to right centerfield.

The Eagles scored twice in the bottom of the sixth on a bases-loaded walk and a fielding error by the Mavericks. Mercy led 3-2.

However, Mercy was able to tack on four insurance runs in the final inning. Rookie catcher Jackie Couillard (Wolcott, Conn.) had a sacrifice fly to drive home Forbes, while junior centerfielder Alexis Majury (Bayville, N.Y.) doubled to left center, which scored both Ausiello and sophomore first baseman Kelly Bentson (Brewster, N.Y.). The final run was recorded when Johnstone reached on an error, allowing Majury to score.

For the Mavericks, Puglisi hurled 5.0 innings of two-hit, no-run ball. She walked one and struck out four as she saw her record improve to 4-3 on the year.

Game Two: Mercy 4, Post 3

Post took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Two innings later, Ausiello put Mercy on the board with an RBI double down the left field line. In the sixth, the guests tacked on another two runs to take a 4-3 lead. Junior Natalie Wabshinak (New Fairfield, Conn.) recorded a two-run single in the frame. On the same play she advanced to second on an error, and then on another error, she scored herself.

For Mercy, Forbes went 2-for-4, while Wabshinak was 2-for-3 at the dish. Puglisi (now 5-3) came in from the bullpen and tossed 5.2 innings, giving up just two hits and no runs.

Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks return to action on Saturday when they host the New York Institute of Technology in ECC play. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
