Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. (Mar. 24, 2012) – On Saturday evening, the Mercy College men's lacrosse squad defeated Lake Erie College, 12-10 at SUNY Purchase, for its second East Coast Conference win of the season. Eight different Mavericks scored for Mercy as the barrage of goals never seemed to stop. With the victory, the Mavericks improved to 2-3 overall and 2-2 in the league. Following the loss, the Storm slipped to 2-3 on the year and 0-2 in the ECC.
The first quarter ended with Lake Erie holding a narrow 3-2 lead. In the second period, the Storm recorded an early tally, but then the Mavericks answered big by scoring five straight goals. Juniors Mike Marzocca (North Babylon, N.Y.), John Fitzpatrick (Yorktown, N.Y.), Erik Grady (Medford, N.Y.), and Michael Munch (West Babylon, N.Y.), and senior Craig Blom (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) found the back of the netting for the Mavericks during that span.
Lake Erie closed out the second quarter with a goal, which cut its deficit to 7-5.
Following the intermission, Mercy scored four consecutive goals to open up the third stanza. Juniors Joe Poppe (Elbridge, N.Y.) and Patrick Hodapp (Oak Ridge, N.J.) notched a pair of tallies each to put Mercy ahead, 11-5 with 3:36 remaining. The Storm then responded with two goals to slice into the hosts' lead.
Although Lake Erie outscored Mercy 3-1 in the final quarter, the Mavericks were able to hold on for the win, 12-10.
For Mercy, Marzocca, Poppe, Hodapp and junior Alex Martello (Montville, N.J.) all scored two goals each, while Hodapp also had two assists for a game-high four points. Junior midfielder John Lionetti (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) scooped up seven ground balls. In the cage, junior goalie T.J. DiCarlo (Farmingdale, N.Y.) stopped 12 shots and earned the win. Sophomore netminder Mike Cashman (Bethpage, N.Y.) subbed in for six minutes in the second quarter while DiCarlo tended to an injury. He recorded a critical save that could have had a drastic impact on the momentum of the game had it gone to the back of the netting.
For Lake Erie, sophomore Trevor Tarte (Amherstburg, Ontario) scored three times, while fellow sophomore MacGregor Johnston (Nanaimo, B.C.) notched two markers. Between the pipes, junior Alexander Wisner (Sylvania, Ohio) made 10 saves.
Head Coach Steve Manitta and the Mavericks return to action on Wednesday when they venture to Rockville Centre, Long Island to battle ECC-foe Molloy College. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
