Softball Slips Up Against Southern New Hampshire University; 13-4, 7-4

Box Score 2 DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 26, 2012) – On a chilly Monday afternoon in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., the Mercy College softball squad fell in a doubleheader to Southern New Hampshire University by final scores of 13-4 and 7-4. With the wins, the Penmen improved to 12-6 overall. Following the losses, the Mavericks dropped to 12-9 on the year.
Game One: Southern New Hampshire 13, Mercy 4
The Penmen opened up the scoring in the first frame off a two-run homer. Mercy answered back in the bottom of the third when senior centerfielder Jenna Ausiello (Petaluma, Calif.) recorded a bases-loaded walk, which was followed up by a bases-clearing, three-run double to left center by rookie catcher Jackie Couillard (Wolcott, Conn.). The Mavericks took a 4-2 lead.
In the top of the fourth inning, the second batter up for SNHU reached off an error by a dropped catch. There was heavy disputing on that play as many of the Mavericks' coaches and players felt the ball was fouled off the batter's foot. After the home plate umpire said it did not hit her foot, she reached base and two batters later, Jessica Douilette hit a grand slam to put the Penmen up, 6-4.
Two innings later, after another dropped catch by the Mavericks, SNHU recorded a second grand slam as Nicole Newell went deep with the bases loaded to make the score 10-4.
A three-run homer in the last frame made it 13-4 in favor of the Penmen and that would end up being the final.
For the Mavericks, Couillard went 2-for-4 and had three RBI, while sophomore first baseman Kelly Bentson (Brewster, N.Y.) was 3-for-4 at the plate. In the circle pitching, sophomore Alexandra Puglisi (Shelton, Conn.) struggled over 5.2 innings surrendering 10 runs, although only two were earned. She struck out nine.
Game Two: Southern New Hampshire 7, Mercy 4
Freshman Shelby Johnson (Bullhead City, Ariz.) took the ball for game 2 and over the first two innings, she got seven of eight batters to make outs. She began to struggle in the third when Kate Stanley homered to drive in three runs for SNHU.
After another three-run homer by the Penmen in inning five, the Mavericks were down, 7-1 when the bottom of the sixth inning rolled around. Couillard recorded a sacrifice fly, which was then followed by a two-run bomb hit to deep centerfield by Johnson to cut the Mavericks' deficit to 7-4.
Unable to push anything across in the seventh inning, Mercy fell to Southern New Hampshire.
For Mercy, Johnson was 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBI, while her pitching line wasn't as kind: 5.0 IP, 8 H, 6 ER, 2 K. Sophomore Mary Sieber (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) came on in relief and hurled two innings, giving up one run on four hits.
