Nine Mavericks Score in Women's Lacrosse Victory Over Chestnut Hill, 16-7
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 31, 2012) – Nine Mavericks scored as the Mercy women's lacrosse team dominated in a 16-7 victory over Chestnut Hill College on Saturday afternoon.
Mercy improves to 1-5 on the season with the victory, while Chestnut Hill falls to 1-6.
The Mavericks were whistled for a whopping 25 fouls and issued two yellow cards but still managed to control possession, winning 17 draw controls to the Griffins' eight and ripping 34 shots, 24 of which were on goal.
Junior attacker Marissa Hurley (Shirley, N.Y.) opened the scoring for Mercy just over two minutes in and although Chestnut Hill got an equalizer five minutes later, sophomore attacker Kristen Znaniecki (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) netted two goals to take Mercy up 3-1 midway through the half. The Mavericks would outscore the Griffins 6-3 to take the three-goal margin into the break.
Chestnut Hill struck first in the second half on a controversial man-up opportunity but fortune favored the Mavericks just seconds later as a pass from sophomore midfielder Tracey Wandle (Rocky Point, N.Y.) deflected off a defender and into the net to start a nine-goal run interrupted by only one Griffins goal to bring the score to 15-5. Mercy never let up in its attack and finished with a nine-goal victory after a pair of late Chestnut Hill scores.
Junior midfielder Julie Darnulc (Baldwin, N.Y.) recorded yet another sterling performance with three goals, two assists and a team-high five ground balls. Junior midfielder Kelsey Sullivan (Mastic, N.Y.) also netted three goals while picking up three ground balls and a draw control and Znaniecki finished with two goals and one assist. Freshman midfielder Alyssa Handel (Medford, N.Y.) recorded three draw controls from the restart and sophomore defender Callie Schwichtenberg (El Cajon, Calif.) cleaned up a team-best five. Junior goalkeeper Stephanie DiLegge (Bay Shore, N.Y.) made 14 saves on 21 shots in net, including an incredible eight on free position attempts.
Junior midfielder Brianne Timony (Allentown, N.J.) led the Griffins with four goals and a team-best three draw controls while junior attacker Nicole Covella (Vineland, N.J.) netted a brace with a team-high six ground balls. Junior goalkeeper Jenn Delahanty (Staten Island, N.Y.) made eight saves in goal.
