Men's Lacrosse Falls to St. Michael's College, 9-5
Box Score COLCHESTER, Vt. (Mar. 6, 2012) – On Tuesday afternoon, the Mercy College men's lacrosse team ventured up to Colchester, Vt. and dropped a non-conference match to St. Michael's College by a final score of 9-5 at Duffy Field. With the win, the Purple Knights improved to 1-0 overall. Following the defeat, the Mavericks slipped to 0-2 on the year.
Junior attack
Frank Henenlotter (Lynbrook, N.Y.) got the scoring started when he found the back of the netting with 13:47 remaining. The Purple Knights, however, were able to answer back with three unanswered goals to close out the opening quarter.
Pete Donnally had two of those three goals for St. Michael's.
With a little over three minutes gone by in the second quarter, the Mavericks cut their deficit to one goal. Senior attackman
Sal Spinelli (East Islip, N.Y.) scored his second marker of the season. Henenlotter was responsible for the assist. Nearly seven minutes later, Donnally notched his second man-up goal of the contest to give the Purple Knights a 4-2 lead heading into halftime.
The third period was all St. Michael's as the hosts scored three times. In the final quarter, Mercy recorded three goals – two by junior attack
Mike Marzocca (North Babylon, N.Y.), but it was too late as the Purple Knights already had built up a formidable lead. The other goal of the quarter was scored by junior attacker
Joe Poppe (Elbridge, N.Y.).
For the Mavericks, Marzocca led the team with two goals, while junior defender
Michael Munch (West Babylon. N.Y.) and freshman midfielder
Anthony Accardi (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) paced the squad with four ground balls each. In the cage, junior
T.J. DiCarlo (Farmingdale, N.Y.) stopped 22 shots.
For the Purple Knights, Donnally netted a game-high six goals, while Evan White scooped up 10 ground balls. Between the pipes, Chris DeMairo recorded seven saves.
Head Coach Steve Manitta and the Mavericks return to action on Saturday when they host ECC-foe and defending NCAA Division II champion Mercyhurst College. The game will be played at Manhattanville College in Purchase, N.Y. and will get underway at 1:00 p.m.
