Softball Notches Twinbill Sweep of St. Thomas Aquinas; 2-1, 12-2

Box Score 2 DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 1, 2012) – On Sunday afternoon, the Mercy College softball team kicked off the month of April in the right direction sweeping a doubleheader versus East Coast Conference-opponent St. Thomas Aquinas College by scores of 2-1 and 12-2. With the wins, the Mavericks improved to 15-12 overall and 5-5 in the conference. Following the defeats, the Spartans slipped to 4-16 on the year and 0-10 in the ECC.
Game One: Mercy 2, St. Thomas Aquinas 1 (12 innings)
After falling behind 1-0, in the bottom of the third inning, Mercy evened the score when senior catcher Rachel Poccia (Larchmont, N.Y.) stole third base and then advanced home on a throwing error by the STAC pitcher.
Mercy had to wait until the bottom of the 12th frame to score the winning run as senior Jenna Ausiello (Petaluma, Calif.) doubled in sophomore Brittany Serrao (Lake Hiawatha, N.J.). Meanwhile, in the circle, sophomore hurler Mary Sieber (Massaepqua Park, N.Y.) pitched all 12 innings, giving up one run on just six hits. She struck out six as her record improved to 6-3.
Game Two: Mercy 12, St. Thomas Aquinas 2 (6 innings)
After the pitching duel that was Game One, the second contest was a Mercy slugfest. The Mavericks opened up the scoring barrage in the bottom of the first off a three-run homer by rookie Jackie Couillard (Wolcott, Conn.). Two innings later, Couillard sent the ball over the fence again – this time a solo shot. Mercy led, 4-0.
Following Couillard's cue, in the bottom of the fifth inning, sophomore first baseman Kelly Bentson (Brewster, N.Y.) unloaded a three-run dinger to put the Mavericks ahead, 7-2. Not satisfied with what the scoreboard read, Mercy piled on some more damage. After junior Ashley Johnstone (Bellmore, N.Y.) recorded an RBI single in the sixth inning, Ausiello smacked a grand slam to invoke the run-rule as Mercy took a 10-run lead and won the contest, 12-2.
In the circle, sophomore Alexandra Puglisi (Shelton, Conn.) pitched all six innings, surrendering two runs on five hits. She whiffed seven batters and walked two. Her record improved to 8-5.
Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks return to the diamond on Tuesday when they travel to Rockville Centre, N.Y. to battle ECC-nemesis Molloy College beginning at 3:00 p.m.
