BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 1, 2012) – The Mercy College baseball team split an East Coast Conference doubleheader with C.W. Post on Sunday afternoon, winning the first game, 2-0, behind another strong showing from freshman Bryan Greig (New City, N.Y.) but falling in the second, 5-4.

Mercy now stands at 5-18 overall and 3-5 in the ECC while C.W. Post is 14-11 (5-1).

Mercy 2, C.W. Post 0

Greig was brilliant on the mound once again in the first game as he hurled a complete-game seven innings in which he allowed just five hits and three walks while striking out eight batters to pick up the win.

C.W. Post was a bit unlucky as junior Bo Budkevics (Deer Park, N.Y.) matched Greig pitch for pitch but took the loss thanks to an error and squeeze bunt pushing both Mercy runs across the plate in the top of the third inning.  His final line showed two unearned runs on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts in seven innings.

Sophomore catcher John Casten (Walden, N.Y.) picked up the lone RBI as senior left fielder Mike Gianzero (Highland Mills, N.Y.) and freshman second baseman Vinny Orlando (East Meadow, N.Y.) scored the runs.  Gianzero led the Mavericks with two hits in three at-bats.

Mercy 4, C.W. Post 5

The Pioneers built up a 2-0 lead in the second game as junior right fielder Gabriel Santos (Jamaica, N.Y.) singled in a run in the second inning and sophomore left fielder Vinny Iacono (Nesconset, N.Y.) scored on a sacrifice fly after a leadoff triple in the fifth.

Mercy struck back in the top of the sixth inning, however, with the bottom of the lineup getting to senior pitcher James Stone (Massapequa, N.Y.) to score four runs and take the 4-2 lead.   The Mavericks loaded the bases with no outs thanks in part to another error and two runs scored on a fielder's choice and throwing error.  Still with no outs, Orlando smacked a double to left center that drove two more runs in.  Unfortunately for the Mavericks, they were unable to get anything else out of the inning.

C.W. Post managed to tie things up in the bottom of the inning though, as Iacono doubled off of senior reliever Chuck DeHart (Staten Island, N.Y.) to drive two runs in from second and third base.  Mercy was unable to retake the lead in the top of the seventh and C.W. Post celebrated a walk-off single by junior catcher Anthony Corona (Carmel, N.Y.) to win, 5-4.

Sophomore first baseman Jesus Jaile (Hartsdale, N.Y.) was 2-4 with a run and freshman left fielder Giovanni Lasalandra (Warwick, N.Y.) finished 1-3 with a run and RBI.  Senior Tyler Savin (Wantagh, N.Y.) left the game after five innings of seven-hit ball in which he gave up two runs and struck out two.

Iacono managed a pair of hits, one run and two RBI in three at-bats for the Pioneers while sophomore designated hitter Tom Tolan (Malverne, N.Y.) went 3-4 with a run and junior first baseman Kevin Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.) was 1-2 with two runs scored.  Anthony Zapulla (Staten Island, N.Y.) picked up the win, allowing one run on one hit in his two innings pitched.  Stone gave up three runs (one earned) on six hits and a walk while striking out one over five innings.

Head Coach Bob Greiner and the Mavericks will host St. Thomas Aquinas College in another ECC matchup on Wednesday, April 4 at 3:00 p.m.
