Softball Splits ECC Twinbill with NYIT

Box Score 2 OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Apr. 10, 2012) - On Tuesday afternoon, the Mercy College softball team went 1-1 in a doubleheader versus East Coast Conference-opponent New York Institute of Technology. In the opening game, the Bears won in walkoff fashion, 3-2, while the Mavericks took game two, 8-1. The Mavericks are now 18-19 overall and 6-12 in the league. The Bears are now 8-24 on the season and 4-13 in the ECC.
Game One: NYIT 3, Mercy 2 (9 innings)
The Mavericks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on an RBI single by sophomore first baseman Kelly Bentson (Brewster, N.Y.). She drove home junior Ashley Johnstone (Bellmore, N.Y.).
The Bears grabbed a 2-1 lead in the third off a two-run homer by Nicole Marquez.
With the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth frame, Natasha Milosevich drove home the game-winning run with a single to left field.
Senior Jenna Ausiello (Petaluma, Calif.) continued her torrid offensive season going 3-for-5 with a run scored. In the circle, sophomore starter Alexandra Puglisi (Shelton, Conn.) went all 8.2 innings, surrendering three runs (two earned) on seven hits. She also struck out eight.
Game Two: Mercy 8, NYIT 1
Game 2 was a different story from the get-go as the Mavericks scored in each of the first four innings. Junior shortstop Kimberly Crnkovich (Salt Lake City, Utah) cranked a two-run homer in the second inning to give Mercy a 3-0 lead. In the third inning, Bentson smacked a dinger of her own - this one a solo shot.
In the circle for Mercy, sophomore Mary Sieber (Massapequa, Park, N.Y.) hurled the complete game (7.0 IP, 9 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 6 K). Her record improved to 8-7 on the year. At the dish, freshman second baseman Shannon Forbes (Nesconset, N.Y.), rookie Jackie Couillard (Wolcott, Conn.) and Crnkovich each drove in two runs.
Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks return to action tomorrow when they face C.W. Post in an ECC twinbill. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
