Kristen Znaniecki and Michelle Tiernan Net Four Goals Apiece as Women's Lacrosse Falls Just Short Against ECC Rival Queens College
Box Score FLUSHING, N.Y. (April 10, 2012) – Sophomore attacker Kristen Znaniecki (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y) led the Mavericks with five points on four goals and an assist and freshman midfielder Michelle Tiernan (Farmingdale, N.Y.) added another four goals but the Mercy College women's lacrosse team came up just short against East Coast Conference rival Queens College on Tuesday afternoon, falling 14-12.
Queens, which received votes in the most recent IWLCA rankings, improves to 6-2 overall and 1-2 in the ECC, while Mercy drops to 1-7 (0-3).
Mercy struggled to gain and maintain possession, losing both the ground ball and turnover battles by significant margins, while Queens meanwhile peppered the Mercy net with 45 shots to the Mavericks' 24. Mercy was unlucky enough to be whistled for an astounding 36 fouls as well, while Queens was called for just 15.
Znaniecki kicked off the scoring on an assist from junior midfielder Julie Darnulc (Baldwin, N.Y.) just two minutes in and Mercy held a 3-1 lead early, but Queens scored six of the half's final eight to take a two-goal lead into the break.
Mercy bounced back to open the second half, with Tiernan netting a trio of goals, including two game-tying ones, and Znaniecki getting the go-ahead strike as the Mavericks scored five of the first seven to take a 10-9 lead with 14:15 to play. Both Tiernan and Znaniecki would net another goal apiece as the half wound down, but Queens managed to put three away in the final four minutes for the victory.
Junior midfielder Kelsey Sullivan (Mastic, N.Y.) picked up a team-high six ground balls and four draw controls while junior goalkeeper Stephanie DiLegge (Bay Shore, N.Y.) made a whopping 20 saves in net.
Juniot attacker Heather Rosen (Holbrook, N.Y.) led the Knights with four goals and an assist, while junior midfielder Sarah Boucher (Oceanside, N.Y.) added three of each and several others notched multiples in both categories. Sophomore goalkeeper Kahli Evans (Adelaide, Australia) made only seven saves while allowing 12 goals.
