Andrew Bock Leads Reshuffled Lineup as Baseball Falls to Caldwell
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (April 10, 2012) – Junior right fielder Andrew Bock (Malverne, N.Y.) led a shuffled Mavericks lineup batting in the three-hole to spark a three-run first inning but the Mercy College baseball team fell to Caldwell College on Tuesday afternoon, 11-4.
Caldwell improves to 8-16 on the year while Mercy slips to 6-22.
Mercy shuffled its lineup a bit, giving some regulars a rest and others a chance to step up, and it paid off early as the Mavericks got on the board scoring three in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore shortstop Jeremy Lovera (Carmel, N.Y.) led off with a single and a Bock double put both in scoring position for freshman first baseman Joseph Gismondi (East Meadow N.Y.) and freshman third baseman Chris Salvo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) to each single a run in. Gismondi came around to score on an error and Mercy led 3-0 out of the gate.
Caldwell picked up two in the top of the second inning, getting two men on with no outs and scoring each on a wild pitch and fielder's choice groundout. The Cougars took over from there, taking the lead with a four-run third inning and putting another five runs up before it was over. Mercy did pick up another run in the fifth inning when Bock singled Lovera in for his second score of the game.
Bock led the team hitting third, going 2-3 with a walk, double, run and RBI while Lovera finished 3-5 with two runs scored and sophomore left fielder Brendan Siegriest (Nanuet, N.Y.) legged out a triple for Mercy's only other extra-base hit. Sophomore starter Chris Fesler (Middle Village, N.Y.) took the loss, while sophomore Adam Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) and senior Chuck DeHart (Staten Island, N.Y.) each struck out one in scoreless innings.
Senior left fielder Joe Doerrer (Middletown, N.J.) paced the Cougars with a 4-5 day that included a double, three runs and two RBI and junior first baseman Adolfo Lopez (Ontario, Canada) impressed going 1-2 with a double, two walks, two runs and two RBI. Freshman Chris DeRogatis (North Arlington, N.J.) earned the win, allowing four runs (three earned) on nine hits and two walks while striking out five over eight innings and freshman Eric Bomenblit (Allentown, N.J.) whiffed two in a scoreless ninth inning.
Head Coach Bob Greiner and the Mavericks will host Felician College (15-17) in another non-conference bout on Thursday, April 12 at 3:00 p.m.
