Softball Drops Epic Doubleheader with C.W. Post, Totaling 18 Innings

Box Score 2 BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 12, 2012) - On Thursday afternoon, the Mercy College softball team battled through a marathon of a doubleheader day, ultimately falling in both contests to East Coast Conference-rival C.W. Post. The first game, which took 13 innings to play, saw the Pioneers edge out the Mavericks, 5-4. In the second contest, C.W. Post won 8-0 after five innings.
Game One: C.W. Post 5, Mercy 4 (13 innings)
Freshman Chloe Solomon (Cold Spring, N.Y.) got the Mavericks (18-21, 6-14 ECC) on the board with an RBI single in the top of the second inning. That was answered one frame later with a three-run outburst by the Pioneers.
Behind 4-2 in the final inning, Mercy battled back. Freshman Jessica Doria (Franklin Square, N.Y.) singled up the middle to drive in junior Lexi Majury (Bayville, N.J.). Then, two batters later, senior Jenna Ausiello (Petaluma, Calif.) recorded the same exact feat, this time scoring Doria. The game went into extra innings tied at 4-4.
In the bottom of the 13th inning, sophomore Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) homered for C.W. Post (30-14, 18-2 ECC) to end the marathon affair, 5-4.
Although she received the loss (9-9), sophomore Alexandra Puglisi (Shelton, Conn.) was incredible coming out of the bullpen. She hurled 8.0 innings and surrendered no runs until the the home run to Gonzalez.
Game Two: C.W. Post 8, Mercy 0 (5 innings)
After the Pioneers grabbed two runs in the bottom of the first inning, frames 3 and 4 saw no scoring. Then, in the bottom of the fourth, C.W. Post broke out for six runs on six hits.
Having Puglisi unavailable from Game 1, Mercy turned to sophomore Kelly Bentson (Brewster, N.Y.), the Mavericks usual first baseman. Bentson struggled allowing five runs. Sophomore starter Mary Sieber (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) gave up three runs on five hits in three innings of work.
Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks return to the field Friday when they face Queens College in Flushing, N.Y. for an ECC twinbill. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
