Softball Earns Twinbill Split with ECC-Opponent Bridgeport

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 14, 2012) - On Saturday, the Mercy College softball team earned an East Coast Conference doubleheader split with the University of Bridgeport to see its record change to 20-23 overall and 8-16 in conference play. The Mavericks won the first game, 4-2. In the second contest, the Purple Knights (14-25, 7-17 ECC) grabbed the victory in five innings, 11-3.

Game One: Mercy 4, Bridgeport 2

In the bottom of the second inning, sophomore Brittany Serrao (Lake Hiawatha, N.J.) recorded an RBI single to grab a 1-0 advantage for the Mavericks. In the next frame, the Purple Knights scored twice to take the lead for the first time on the afternoon.

In the bottom of the fifth, senior shortstop Jenna Ausiello (Petaluma, Calif.) scored on a wild pitch to tie the game and then rookie catcher Chloe Solomon (Cold Spring, N.Y.) singled down the left field line to drive in junior centerfielder Lexi Majury (Bayville, N.J.).

Ausiello scored on a wild pitch once again in the bottom of the sixth inning to put Mercy up, 4-2.

In the circle, Mercy sophomore starter Alexandra Puglisi (Shelton, Conn.) threw all seven innings, allowing two runs (none earned) on three hits. She struck out six as her record improved to 11-9. In the batter's box, Majury And Ausiello both went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Game Two: Bridgeport 11, Mercy 3 (5 innings)

The Purple Knights broke out for a big score in the top of the second inning when Bridgeport notched a grand slam and a three-run homer. Due to fielding errors, all seven runs were unearned.

In the bottom of the fourth down 11-0, junior right fielder Ashley Johnstone (Bellmore, N.Y.) smacked an RBI single, which was followed by Ausiello scoring on a wild pitch for the third time on the afternoon.

To lead off the bottom of the fifth frame, freshman pitcher Shelby Johnson (Bullhead City, Ariz.) cranked a solo home run to deep centerfield.

Coming out of the bullpen, Johnson pitched two scoreless innings, allowing just three hits.

Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 17 when they host Queens College in an ECC doubleheader. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
