Softball Smacks Four Homers; Splits ECC Doubleheader with Queens

Box Score 2 DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 17, 2012) - On Tuesday afternoon, the Mercy College softball team took to Smith Field versus East Coast Conference-opponent Queens College, needing to sweep the doubleheader in order to keep its playoff hopes alive. After winning the first contest, 8-4, the Mavericks saw those postseason chances fade away as the Knights notched a 12-5 victory in Game 2.
Game One: Mercy 8, Queens 4
Down 1-0 in the bottom of the first, senior centerfielder Jenna Ausiello (Petaluma, Calif.) cranked a two-run dinger to left field to grab the Mavericks a 2-1 lead. Two innings later, rookie catcher Jackie Couillard (Wolcott, Conn.) notched an RBI single to add an insurance run.
The Knights posted three runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead back. The Mavericks had postseason aspirations on their minds, however, as in the bottom of the frame they answered back immediately. Two RBI singles, a bases-loaded walk and a two-run single plated five runners. Mercy took an 8-4 advantage. It would be one the Mavericks wouldn't relinquish for the rest of the game.
For Mercy, Ausiello went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, a homer and three RBI, while Couillard also had three hits in four at-bats. In the circle, sophomore starter Alexandra Puglisi (Shelton, Conn.) improved her record to 12-9 and recorded eight strikeouts. Fellow sophomore Mary Sieber (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) came in out of the bullpen for the final two innings, didn't allow a hit and whiffed two Knights.
Game Two: Queens 12, Mercy 5
Sophomore first baseman Kelly Bentson (Brewster, N.Y.) cranked Mercy's second home run of the day when she blasted a leadoff solo shot to right centerfield. That lead was short-lived as Queens smacked a two-run dinger in the next inning.
In the bottom of the second, following a game-tying RBI single from sophomore second baseman Briana Panarese (Monroe, N.Y.), junior shortstop Kimberly Crnkovich (Salt Lake City, Utah) launched Mercy's third home run of the afternoon. The two-run shot put the hosts up, 4-2.
Fielding errors ultimately led to the Mavericks' demise as three miscues allowed eight runs to come across home plate in the top of the fifth inning.
Rounding out the home runs for Mercy was junior left fielder Lexi Majury (Bayville, N.J.) in the bottom of the sixth.
Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks return to the diamond tomorrow when they travel to nearby Nyack College for a twinbill beginning at 3:00 p.m.
