Box Score 2 DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 19, 2012) - On Thursday afternoon, the Mercy College softball team honored its two seniors, Jenna Ausiello (Petaluma, Calif.) and Rachel Poccia (Larchmont, N.Y.), for their contributions to the program over the past two seasons. In Game 1 of its doubleheader versus Felician College, the Mavericks fell, 12-6. In Game 2, Mercy played comeback as a five-run, bottom of the sixth inning erased its deficit and sent their fans home happy.
Game One: Felician 12, Mercy 6
Tied 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning, Felician unloaded for six runs on four hits. Mercy (24-25) answered back by plating three in the bottom half of the frame. The action got started with a solo shot by junior left fielder Lexi Majury (Bayville, N.J.). One inning later, Majury did it again as she deposited the softball over the right centerfield fence.
However, the Golden Falcons (14-32) continued to pile on the runs, scoring another five and ultimately winning, 12-6.
Majury finished 2-for-4 with two homers, while junior right fielder Ashley Johnstone (Bellmore, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 with a run scored. In the pitcher's circle, sophomore starter Mary Sieber (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) gave up 10 runs, only five of which were earned due to five Mercy fielding errors. Sieber walked four and whiffed five batters. She saw her record slip to 9-12 on the season.
Game Two: Mercy 6, Felician 4 (6 innings)
In the top of the fifth inning, Felician took a 3-1 lead off a three-run blast by freshman first basemen Ciera Clark (Granite Bay, Calif.). A Felician RBI double one frame later padded the Golden Falcons' lead to 4-1.
The Mavericks, however, showed a lot of guts and never gave up. In the bottom of the sixth inning, rookie pinch hitter Shelby Johnson (Bullhead City, Ariz.) singled in two runs. Following her, Ausiello smacked a game-tying doubled to centerfield to drive home Johnson to even the score at 4-4. Then, it what ended up being the final batter of the game, Majury cranked a long two-run home run to left centerfield to give the Mavericks a 6-4 lead. It was Majury's third dinger of the afternoon. Due to darkness, the game ended at 6-4 and Mercy won.
Ausiello finished 2-for-3 with one run scored and two RBI, while freshman third baseman Chrissie Cleary (Smithtown, N.Y.) went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and a double. Starting sophomore hurler Alexandra Puglisi (Shelton, Conn.) earned the win (14-9) and struck out nine.
CAREER NOTES: Ausiello's 65 hits this season broke her own record from a year ago for the school's single season hits record.
