Box Score 2 DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 5, 2012) - The Mercy College softball team dropped a pair of games to East Coast Conference-opponent Dowling College on Thursday afternoon, 15-4 (6 innings) and 7-0, at Smith Field in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. With the wins, the Golden Lions improved to 16-9 overall and 10-4 in the conference. Following the defeats, the Mavericks slipped to 15-16 on the year and 5-9 in the ECC.
The opening game of the twinbill was a tough one to swallow for the Mavericks as Mercy witnessed five balls go over the fence for home runs. Sophomore starter Mary Sieber (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) was only charged with two earned runs as the others came as byproducts of fielding and throwing errors.
The lone bright spot for the hosts was senior shortstop Jenna Ausiello (Petaluma, Calif.) depositing a Dowling offering to deep centerfield for a two-run shot in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Mercy also struggled against Dowling starter Jessie Stavola (Montauk, N.Y.) in Game 2 as the Mavericks' bats were shut out by the Golden Lion's power arm. Stavola threw 12.1 innings today, striking out 21 and allowed no runs.
Head Coach Mike Fazio and his troops will look to bounce back tomorrow, April 6, when they host Chestnut Hill College in a non-conference doubleheader. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
