Puglisi Throws No-Hitter as Softball Sweeps Chestnut Hill; 8-0 and 18-1

Box Score 2 DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 6, 2012) - On Friday, the Mercy College softball team swept a doubleheader from Chestnut Hill College at Smith Field in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. by final scores of 8-0 and 18-1. In the first contest, sophomore starter Alexandra Puglisi (Shelton, Conn.) hurled a no-hitter en route to her ninth win of the year.
Game One: Mercy 8, Chestnut Hill 0 (5 innings)
With the game scoreless in the bottom of the third inning, the Mavericks plated five home to jump on the scoreboard first. Four RBI singles were recorded, while senior shortstop Jenna Ausiello (Petaluma, Calif.) had an RBI double. One inning later, sophomore Kelly Bentson (Brewster, N.Y.) cranked a solo home run to right field to join the scoring party.
In the bottom of the fifth, junior Ashley Johnstone (Bellmore, N.Y.) notched an RBI single, which closed out the game for Mercy due to the run-rule. Puglisi who didn't allow a hit and saw her record improve to 9-7, walked one and struck out eight batters.
In the batter's box, junior centerfielder Lexi Majury (Bayville, N.J.) went 2-for-3, scoring a run and driving in two, while Johnstone was a perfect 3-for-3 and junior third baseman Kimberly Crnkovich (Salt Lake City, Utah) had an unblemished 2-for-2 with a walk and RBI.
Game Two: Mercy 18, Chestnut Hill 1 (5 innings)
After the Griffins (1-17) grabbed a run in the opening frame against Mercy sophomore hurler Mary Sieber (Massapequa Park, N.Y.), the Mavericks began to unload totaling an astounding 18 runs in five innings.
Mercy (17-16) put up a lot of crooked numbers in this contest. Sophomore second baseman Briana Panarese (Monroe, N.Y.) went 4-for-4 at the dish with three RBI, a double and two runs scored, while Majury recorded a 3-for-3 performance at the plate (a double, two runs, two RBI). Five different Mavericks had two RBI in the game. In total, Mercy recorded 18 base hits.
In the circle, Sieber allowed one run in 4.0 innings, scattering three hits.
Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks return to action tomorrow when they venture to Sparkill, N.Y. to take on St. Thomas Aquinas College. The doubleheader is slated to start at 1:00 p.m.
