Softball Drops Pair of Contests to St. Thomas Aquinas

Box Score 2 SPARKILL, N.Y. (Apr. 7, 2012) - The Mercy College softball team ventured to Sparkill, N.Y. on Saturday to take on East Coast Conference-opponent St. Thomas Aquinas College in a doubleheader. The Spartans took the opening contest in extra innings, 4-3, and then won the second, 4-2. With the wins, STAC improved to 6-20 overall and 2-14 in the league. Following the defeats, the Mavericks fell to 17-18 on the season and 5-11 in the ECC.
Game One: St. Thomas Aquinas 4, Mercy 3 (8 innings)
Down 2-0 in the seventh inning, Mercy plated three runs to take the lead and momentarily, back off the plank. Senior shortstop Jenna Ausiello (Petaluma, Calif.) recorded a two-run single, which was followed two batters later by an RBI single off the bat of freshman catcher Jackie Couillard (Wolcott, Conn.).
STAC was able to knot the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI ground out.
Then, in the bottom of the eighth, the first Spartan batter reached on an error, and quickly stole second base. She was then driven home by a single.
On the mound, sophomore starter Alexandra Puglisi (Shelton, Conn.) threw 6.0 innings and allowed two runs on three hits. She whiffed nine. Sophomore Mary Sieber (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) came on in relief and was strapped with the loss (7-6).
Game Two: St. Thomas Aquinas 4, Mercy 2
The Spartans grabbed a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second with the help of two Mercy errors. An RBI single in the next frame turned the score to 4-0 in favor of STAC. The Mavericks would plate two in the seventh, but it was too little too late as the hosts secured the 4-2 win.
Sieber pitched the whole game for the Mavericks and saw her record slip to 7-7 on the season. She gave up four runs in 6.0 innings, but only one was earned.
Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 10 when they travel to Long Island to battle ECC-opponent New York Institute of Technology. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
