Women's Lacrosse Scores Season High 19 Goals in Win Over ECC Rival Bridgeport; DiLegge Returns to Top of Division II
Box Score BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (May 6, 2012) – Junior goalkeeper Stephanie DiLegge (Bay Shore, N.Y.) made an incredible 11 saves while allowing just two goals to help lead the Mercy College women's lacrosse team to a season-ending 19-6 victory over East Coast Conference rival the University of Bridgeport on Sunday afternoon.
Mercy finishes the season at 7-8 overall and 4-4 in the ECC while Bridgeport drops to 3-9 (0-8).
The 19 goals are a season-best for the Mavericks and DiLegge's 11 saves in 13 chances despite four man-down periods bring her season save percentage back up to a Division II-leading .558. Junior attacker Marissa Hurley (Shirley, N.Y.) also recorded a hat trick to become the first Maverick in program history to score 100 goals.
The Mavericks came out firing from the start as they put away four goals in the first five minutes before Bridgeport could respond. Even after the Purple Knights got on the board eight minutes in, Mercy went on to outscore them 15-2 in the half. The rivals battled to a 4-4 draw over the second half as Mercy simply held on for the dominant victory.
Sophomore attacker Kristen Znaniecki (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) totaled eight points on a brace and career-high six assists while sophomore attacker Kelsey Bub (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) scored four goals and added an assist and junior midfielder Julie Darnulc (Baldwin, N.Y.) scored once and made three assists. DiLegge, Hurley and senior defender Dana Harjus (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) each picked up three ground balls while freshman midfielder Michelle Tiernan (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and junior midfielder Kelsey Sullivan (Mastic, N.Y.) pulled down four draw controls apiece. Freshman Mia Wagner (Hamburg, N.Y.) made four saves in just over 15 minutes in net.
Graduate student attacker Lindsay Kehoe (West Haven, Conn.) was the Purple Knights' only multiple-goal scorer with a brace while freshman midfielder Alexia Costa (Providence, R.I.) and sophomore midfielder Kathlena Rivera (Staten Island, N.Y.) grabbed four ground balls. Costa also pulled down 10 draw controls and Kehoe added another five. Sophomore goalkeeper Victoria Harrison (Massapequa, N.Y.) made five saves while allowing 15 goals over the first half and sophomore attacker Nichole Rogers (Dallas, Texas) made three saves filling in at goalkeeper in the second half.
